![]() ![]() Fortunately this tale of … vengeance?… can be mostly ignored allowing the player to treat each level as an isolated challenge. The plot weakness seems to strem from the ambitious, but small, development team focusing on gameplay over character development. The story does somehow tie-in with a wider narrative laid out in graphic novels (so I understand) however in the context of the game it is a precarious “ kaputte Kaffeemaschine” (as our German speaking friends might say) attempting to add an element of coherency through otherwise disjointed encounters. Hopping back in now I found that the engine is a little more polished and the single player campaign is a jumbled heap of these levels rammed together with a slender thread of plot holding them precariously together. At that time the ingame engine seemed largely functional, but gameplay was limited to short “Kill Everyone” or “Parkour” style levels designed by both the game developers and the highly-active community. The last time I burrowed in to the world of ‘Overgrowth’ was several years ago. Maybe I have some kind of mystical industry influence, in which case I’ll be accepting donations to mention conspicuously unfinished/perpetually developed games here in a hope that it forces them out into the world… any takers?… WOOOHHHH!!!!!! ![]() I’m not saying that the good folks over at Wolfire read the piece, but it seems coincidental that just a few short weeks later ‘Overgrowth’ finally made it out of Early Access for an official release. At the time of penning that article I also mentioned ‘Overgrowth’ as having immensely satisfying 3rd person combat that I wanted to revisit once it had managed to accrue enough momentum to break out of a seemingly infinite early access gravity well. The game supports free or inexpensive mod tools such as Blender.Wolfire Games have already featured once in my ramblings their other major release ‘ Receiver‘ showed me that forcing the player to work hard to achieve something as simple as reloading a gun makes for an interesting shift in focus on the tired FPS format. The level editor is included with the game. Parts of the game are scripted with AngelScript. On April 21, 2022, the code for the game was released as open-source via GitHub. The game reached 1.0 and was released on October 16, 2017, which had been revealed as the release date a week earlier. On January 18, 2017, the game was officially updated to beta status. Overgrowth was released December 17, 2013, as an Early Access title on Steam. These are available to people who have pre-ordered the game. Since November 25, 2008, Wolfire Games has released new Alpha tests every 2–5 months, containing most of the features so far implemented in the game. Overgrowth is built on the gameplay of its predecessor, Lugaru, and as such uses a hand-to-hand combat system that bases attacks and counters on timing and context using context-sensitive action buttons rather than different key combinations. Lugaru is a chaotic world, inhabited by anthropomorphic rabbits, wolves, rats, cats and dogs living at a pre-industrial level of technology. The game takes place on the island of Lugaru, an unknown number of years after the fall of the human race, indicated by the ruins of tall man-made structures overrun by vegetation. After avenging the murder of his family, killing the Alpha wolf, and killing the corrupt king Hickory, Turner refused to take Hickory's place on the throne, instead choosing to leave the monarchy headless and wander the island in search of some new purpose. Overgrowth 's story takes place several years after the events of Lugaru and follows the same protagonist: Turner. The game plays as a 3D third-person action game, set in a pre-industrial world of anthropomorphic fighter rabbits, wolves, dogs, cats and rats. The player character is Turner, an anthropomorphic rabbit with combat skills. Overgrowth is the sequel to Lugaru, a 3D action game from the same company. It was announced on September 17, 2008, and released on October 16, 2017, after 9 years of development and early access. Overgrowth is an action video game released by Wolfire Games available for Microsoft Windows, macOS and Linux. Single-player, local multiplayer (with included mod) ![]()
